Principal's Message
Dear Gatzert families,
While we hope you have a fun, relaxing time with your families and friends during spring break, there are some things you can do with your children that will support their academic progress during their break. Please continue to have students read each day independently for about 30 minutes in their “just right” books. Most all of the children from Gatzert know their reading level and should be reading books at that level. If you are going to read with them, they could read a book that is a little more difficult, which would be their instructional level. You can help them sound out words and talk about new vocabulary. It is also a good idea to discuss what they have read to assure that there is good comprehension.
During break, students can also practice their writing skills. This can be in the form of a daily journal entry, creative writing story, or the composition of a letter to a family member. Starting in May all Gatzert students will be taking assessments to show what they have learned this year. Just like physical exercise, it is important to keep academic skills well sharpened each day to the best opportunities for improvement.
Please have a great break and enjoy yourselves. I look forward to our continued work together between spring break and the end of the school year, June 22nd!
Sincerely,
Mr. Greg Imel, Principal
Head Teacher's Message
Dear Gatzert Families,
Spring has finally sprung! Students are getting ready to show how much they have
learned this year on the MSP and MAP assessments!

Encourage your students to read, read, read on spring break.

Parents you can support their reading efforts by encouraging them read to you or to a brother, a sister or another member of the family. Another way you can support your students is to make sure that some of the books that they are reading are “just right for them”. Your child knows what level they are on and should be reading a leveled book nightly.

Lastly, so that your student is ready for testing, please make sure they go to bed a bit earlier than usual.  Students need to arrive at school by 8:30AM so they can eat breakfast and get to class on time.

We have a very structured schedule for testing and if your student is late, they will not be able to start their test on time.

Parents, thank you for all of your support!

!EXTRA! --- GATZERT STUDENT WINS TRIP TO NEW YORK

Black History by William
February is black history month and we should all know this
Dr. King fought for our rights
And Madam CJ Walker kept our hair neat and tight
Benjamin Banneker worked with a grand clock
Man, black history really rocks
Michel Jordan has his own shoe you can buy at the mall
And Jacky Robinson was the first African American
To hit a major league baseball
Michelle Obama is married to pres. number 44
And Gandhi said end all war
Sojourner Truth only spoke the truth
We should believe her, me and you
Muhammad Ali only fought in the ring
He probably bought his wife lots of bling bling
Jessie Owens runs lots of track
And Bill Cosby knows how to act
Maya Angelo is a great poet
Oprah Winfrey changed lots of people’s lives
And Coretta Scott was Dr King’s wife

After competeing for the second straight year, William, through hard work and perserverance, was chosen to represent Seattle in the America Scores National Poetry Slam on April 16, 2012 at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem.

Congratulations William and good luck in New York
GATZERT IS PROUD OF YOU!
